Adrian Smith was the youngest child of his decorator father, and grew up in Clapton, London with his older brother, Patrick, and sister, Kathleen. He became interested in rock music at the age of 15 when he bought his first album, Deep Purple’s “Machine Head”. Smith befriended the Iron Maiden guitarist Dave Murray, and the two of them founded the group called Stone Free, with Murray on guitar, Smith doing vocals, and Dave McCloughlin playing the bongos. Smith stated that his favorite guitarists were Johnny Winter and Pat Travers, and that he was more influenced by blues rock than metal.
Smith left school at 16 and formed the band called Evil Ways with Dave Murray, but later renamed it Urchin. After passing an audition to join Iron Maiden, Smith debuted on a German TV show, and was a part of the band’s “Killers” album in 1981.
