When his family moved to California, Alan attended Hawthorne High School where he met Brian and Carl Wilson. After matriculating, he went to Ferris State University and then moved to El Carmino College. There he was reunited with Brian, and they then had the idea forming a band. He had originally wanted the Beach Boys to be a folk band, but the group eventually decided to go into rock ‘n’ roll. He was well known for his knowledge of various string instruments and originally played the bass for the band before going on a brief hiatus to pursue dentistry. He eventually returned in 1963, becoming the rhythm guitarist of the band.
Jardine was first heard in the song “Christmas Day” which was a part of the 1964 album “The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album”. This was followed by the song “Help Me, Rhonda” which became a number one hit, and soon he would regularly contribute his vocals to many of their tracks.
