Clare grew up in a music oriented family, and was influenced by his father’s jazz records – he looked up to artists like Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. Alex originally played the trumpet and drums, but eventually replaced them with playing the guitar, and songwriting. He attended Bishop Challoner School in Bromley, and continued his education in Westminster Kingsway College, in the catering field.
However, he went on to sign a contract with Island label in the UK following his demo. He made his debut with ‘’The Lateness of the Hour’’, an album produced by Major Lazer and Mike Spencer, which received mixed reviews but didn’t do as well commercially as was expected, and Clare was subsequently released from the record label. Nevertheless, things took a turn for better in the upcoming period – the first single from album was ‘’Up All Night’’ followed by ‘’Too Close’’ which achieved international success, and was selected to be in the advertisement for Internet Explorer 9 and soared as high as fourth spot on the UK Singles Chart. It also did well on German charts, and eventually reached number one.
Clare gained a lot of recognition in May 2011 when radio DJ Reggie Yates made his cover of ‘’When Doves Cry’’ his song of the day. In the following period, 3FM a Dutch radio station named his song ‘’Too Close’’ their megahit of that week, and subsequently the lead single of ‘’The Lateness of the Hour’’ earned a spot on the Top 10 hit songs list in five countries. Teaming up with the Universal Records, Alex made his songs available in the US as well. In 2012, Clare sang on Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of “The War of the Worlds – The New Generation”, a concept album based on the novel of the same name.
Alex published his second album – “Three Hearts” – in May 2014; the album’s lead single was ‘’War Rages On’’, which would later on become the theme song for “Our Girl”, a BBC drama. However, the second album wasn’t as successful as the first one. Subsequently, he was named songwriter of the year by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Most recently, in 2016 his song ‘’Up All Night’’ was used as a theme song for “Class”, a BBC fiction series. The same year he released the album ”Tail of Lions”, which received mostly positive reviews from the audience and critics, scoring a total four out of five stars on AllMusic. Alex then established his own record label in late 2016.
In his personal life, Alex Clare briefly dated Amy Winehouse in 2006. He is an Orthodox Jew and keeps a strict kosher diet. While touring, he tries to maintain the Talmud schedule and coordinate his job with his religious beliefs. Clare’s ‘’Tail of Lions’’ has religious meaning behind it, and several songs were inspired by Jewish proverbs. He is now married, has a child and lives in Jerusalem.
