Alex started playing football at Helix Charter High School, and led the team to a 25-1 record; the team also won two San Diego CIF section championships. He became the team MVP during his junior and senior years, and broke several school records. After matriculating, he attended the University of Utah, becoming the 2004 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and posting a 21-2 record as a starter for the Utes, plus helping the team win the 2003 Liberty Bowl and the 2005 Fiesta Bowl. He graduated with a degree in economics in just two years and even started working on his master’s degree before joining the NFL.

With a great scores during the NFL combine, he was picked by the San Francisco 49ers as the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. Alex agreed to a six-year $49.5 million contract with $24 million guaranteed, raising his net worth significantly. Despite this good start, he would only play nine games during his rookie season, and play poorly because of an injury. He would go on to the next season working with a new offensive coordinator, and get a good start, which was short lived however, as he had difficulties once again, biut after criticism by analysts, he shone in late season games, including a win in the final game of the season which knocked the Dnver Broncos out of play-off contention.

In 2007, he would start working with another offensive coordinator. His shoulder was injured later in the season and the 49ers had difficulty getting another win. Smith was placed as an injured reserve to let his shoulder heal. The following season, Smith lost the starting position and was placed on the injured reserve once again. The 49ers were looking to release him but he opted to stay with the team, taking a significant pay cut. In 2009, he battled to get his starting position back and after good performances was able to earn it.

He showed signs of progress, slowly improving his statistics. The next season, the 49ers performed poorly and he received boos from most crowds. He helped the team get a few wins The 2011 season would mark a change for his career as he worked with Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman. With this new coach and offensive coordinator, Smith’s skill started to improve dramatically. He helped the team win games and was starting to become a leader. He helped the team get a 13-3 record during the regular season, setting personal highs for all of his statistics. Smith then helped the team get a win against the New Orleans Saints but eventually lost against the New York Giants in the NFC Championship Game. When he became a free agent, he signed a three-year $24 million deal to remain with the 49ers. However, due to injury he would lose his starting position and was eventually traded. He only won 19 games in 50 starts during his seasons with the 49ers.

Smith was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs and he would become the starter of the team, continuing to display his improvement. The Chiefs would be unbeaten under Smith’s leadership for the first nine games in 2013, but lost in the AFC Championship game. He was selected for the Pro Bowl, and would continue on to have two winning seasons. He has set several minor records, but he continues to play so may well improve on his career statistics.

For his personal life, it is known that Smith married former cheerleader Elizabeth Barry in 2009 and they have two children.
