Alonzo Mourning started playing basketball while attending Indian River High School in his hometown. In his junior year, he led his team to 51 wins in a row, earning a state title in 1987. By his senior year, Alonzo averaged a triple double per game, with 25 points, 15 rebounds and 12 blocks and USA Today, Gatorade, Naismith and Parade rewarded him with The Player of the Year title. Later, Alonzo enrolled at Georgetown University where he continued to play basketball and was named All-American, in all his last three years of college.

His hard work and dedication were recognized, and in the 1992 NBA Draft he was #2 draft pick, selected by the Charlotte Hornets, just behind the legendary Shaquille O’Neal. Averaging 21.0 points and 10.3 rebounds, Alonzo Mourning was chosen in the 1993 league’s all-rookie team. Great performances during the 1994-95 season, earned Alonzo participation at the NBA All Star Game in 1995, in which he scored 10 points and secured eight rebounds. These initial successes provided the basis for Alonzo Mourning’s net worth.

After rejecting a seven-year contract extension with Hornets, worth $11.2 million, Alonzo Mourning transferred to the Miami Heat. Prior to playing in 1996 NBA All-Star Game and a knock-out in the first stage of play-offs, Zo averaged 23.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game. With his career on the rise, he continued to play at the highest level, however in the beginning of the 2000 season, Alonzo Mourning was diagnosed with a serious kidney condition – focal segmental glomerulosclerosis – which led to him missing the first half of the season. Despite his condition and due to the overall good performances, he was still selected for the NBA All-Star Game in 2002. All these engagements have contributed to his overall net worth.

As a free agent in 2003, Zo signed with the New Jersey Nets; it was supposed to be a four-year deal, but because of his kidney decease, he was forced to retire. Still, after a successful kidney transplant in the last quartile of 2003, he returned to the Nets and started practicing again, and earned a place on the regular rooster for the 2004-05 season. Because of his medical conditions, he didn’t manage to fulfill the team’s expectation, and was traded to Toronto Raptors, but bought out his contract for $9 million and joined the Miami Heat one more time. These ventures certainly left an impact on the total amount of Alonzo Mourning’s wealth.

Prior to his retirement from professional basketball in 2009, Alonzo Mourning won his first NBA Championship title and the first one in the team’s history in 2006. In 2009, Alonzo Mourning became the first player in the history of Miami Heat whose number was retired. All these achievements have certainly helped Alonzo Mourning to increase his impressive overall net worth.

Apart from his club career, Alonzo Mourning also left a trace with the national team with which he won the bronze and the gold medals at the 1990 and 1994 FIBA World Championships, respectively, and the gold medal at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.

Although Zo doesn’t play anymore, he is still occupied with basketball – since 2009 he has served as the Vice President of Player Programs and Development of Miami Heat. In 2014, Alonzo Mourning was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

When it comes to his personal life, Alonzo Mourning has been married to Tracy since 1997, with whom he has two sons and a daughter, and currently resides in Pinecrest, Florida.

Alonzo Mourning is very active when it comes to charitable causes – as the founder of Alonzo Mourning Charities (or Mourning Family Foundation as it is often referred to), since 1997 he has raised over $10 million for different children’s development programs. In 2003, he founded Zo’s Fund for Life, a campaign focused on raising funds for the research of kidney diseases.
