In defiance of parent Church of God in Christ's ban on the ordination of women as ministers, he named his twin-sister, Sandra Crouch, as co-minister of the church he led after the death of their father and brother. When the parent Church of God in Christ threatened sanctions, they renamed their church New Christ Memorial Church.

Attendance at the church soon soared.
