Andre was born to Rubin Carter who also played football, mostly as a defensive tackle for the Denver Broncos – his name Andre came from Andre Townsend, his father’s close friend and teammate at the Denver Broncos. Although he was born in Denver, he grew up in San Jose, California where he went to Oak Grove High School, where he started playing football, and earned several honors, including being named as the Gatorade California Player of the Year.
After matriculation, he enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley where he continued his football career, and became one of the most successful players in his class. He was a unanimous first-team All-American, and the universities most valuable player. Furthermore, he won the Morris Trophy, while he was also selected into first-team All-Pac-10.
After a successful college career, he declared for the 2001 NFL Draft, and was selected by the San Francisco 49ers as the seventh overall pick. Although he was drafted as a defensive end he was moved to the position of an outside linebacker, and in his rookie season, Andre played in 15 games and made 46 tackles with 6.5 sacks. Andre played for the 49ers until 2005 and had success, but when his contract expired the franchise chose not to extend the contract with one of the top defensive players, and as a result, he joined the Washington Redskins on a contract worth $30 million, over five years, which only increased his wealth to a large degree. He was used as a defensive end – his natural position – and had his career-high in tackles with 56 and also made 6.0 sacks. He played for the Redskins until 2010 and had his best season in 2009 with 62 tackles, and 11.0 sacks. However, the team changed its head coach by hiring Mike Shanahan who switched the defense from 4-3 to 3-4 and Andre was back to the outside linebacker position – he was released by the team before the start of the 2011 season.
Carter then signed a contract with the New England Patriots worth $1.75 million for one year, which could go up to $2.75 million if he accomplishes all conditions from the contract. During his season with the Patriots, Andre played in 14 games before suffering a tear in left quadriceps tendon; he made 52 tackles and 10.0 sacks, including the single game record of 4.0 sacks by a Patriots player.
Following the end of his contract, he signed with the Oakland Raiders for the 2012 season and played in 12 games, before being released on the 31st August 2013.
After his release, he returned to the Patriots as they needed a veteran player since their defense became too weak, due to season ending injuries of Vince Wilfork and Jerod Mayo. He appeared in nine games, making four tackles and 2.0 sacks, before announcing his retirement.
After his career ended, Andre found a job as an undergraduate assistant at the University of California in 2015.
Also, he started his coaching career, being appointed by the Miami Dolphins as their assistant defensive line coach, which also added to his wealth.
Regarding his personal life, Andre is married to Bethany with whom he has two children.
