After matriculating from New Rochelle High School, Andrea attended the University of Pennsylvania to study English literature. During her time there she became the news director of WXPN, a student radio station. She then graduated in 1967, staying in Philadelphia and becoming a reporter at KYW radio. As she continued her career, she started to earn popularity, as she also reported for KYW-TV. She then moved to Washington DC to become part of WTOP, but after two years she moved to NBC, and became a general correspondent until 1979, when she became the energy correspondent. She also covered the White House until becoming congressional correspondent during 1988. Around this time, she had covered the Three Mile Island nuclear accident and the 1970s energy crisis. Her net worth rose steadily.
In 1994, she became the Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for NBC News and still continues working as such today. As her career continued into the 2000s, she become part of various NBC broadcasts such as “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt”, and “MSNBC”. She also became a guest host and interviewed guest for “Meet the Press”, “The Rachel Maddow Show” and “Hardball with Chris Matthews’. In 2008, she secured her own show entitled “Andrea Mitchell Reports” which still airs today. She’s also written a book entitled “Talking Back… to Presidents, Dictators, and Assorted Scoundrels”.
Some of her major achievements include exclusive interviews with President Fidel Castro and access to Cuba in 2003. She also covered the United Nations Debate before the Iraq War, and has travelled to Afghanistan, North Korea, Haiti, Pakistan and Bosnia, among many other assignments.
Even with her decorated career and rise to the top of NBC, she has also had her share of controversies. In 2005, she was ejected out of the press room after asking Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir questions deemed inappropriate by his entourage – for her it was simply press freedom. She also commented on the southwest Virginia area as rednecks, a statement that she later apologized for. She also had a bit of an issue when she commented that presidential candidate Mitt Romney might have had a supermarket scanner incident, similar to George H.W. Bush’s incident during 1992.
For her personal life, it is known that Mitchell was married to Gil Jackson, but they divorced in the 1970s. She married to former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan – who is 20 years older than her – in 1997. Andrea was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, but it was caught early and treated successfully.
