Anita was abandoned by her biological mother, and was raised by her foster parents from the age of two. Steeped in music since her childhood, Anita started singing in her teenage years, initially performing in nightclubs in Detroit which helped her to get noticed by David Washington who eventually helped her to sign with Ariola Records as a member of the group, Chapter 8. The band went on to release a self-titled album which however did not succeed in the music market.

Eventually, driven by her passion for music, Anita started a solo music career in 1982 when she signed a deal with the Beverley Glen label, and released an album, “The Songstress” in 1983. Singles from the album like “No More Tears”, “Angel” and “You’re the Best Thing Yet” went on to get listed in R&B charts, and with this success, Anita became a known name in the American music industry.
