To begin with, Anne was raised in a Catholic household in Rockville Centre, on Long Island New York; her mother killed herself when Anne was 11 years old. She received her further education at the Dramatic Workshop at The New School in Manhattan.

Concerning her professional career, Anne debuted with a small role in the television series “The Greatest Gift” (1954–1955). Then, she episodically appeared in a number of series until she became a cast member of “The Corner Bar” (1973). O’Meara married Jerry Stiller, with whom she was a member of the theatre company The Compass Players (which later would be called The Second City) and with whom she formed a comedy duo. They were frequent guests on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and other television programs. They then had their own show “The Stiller and Meara Show” (1986) in which Anne also served as a co-writer, however the show was cancelled due to low audience ratings. Regardless, her net worth was well established.

In the 1980s, Anne participated alongside Carroll O’Connor and Martin Balsam in the sitcom “Archie Bunker’s Place”. She really rose to fame after landing the role of Dorothy Halligan’s mother Kate in the series “ALF” (1984-1985). Other more recent credits include the series “Sex and the City” (2002–2004) as Mary, and Veronica Brady in “The King of Queens” (2003–2007). In season of 2004-2005 appeared in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”.

Talking about her career on the big screen, she appeared in the main cast of many films, although usually she had supporting roles. However, she starred alongside her husband in the comedy film “A Fish in the Bathtub” (1999) directed by Joan Micklin Silver, and had the lead role in the drama film “Another Harvest Moon” (2009).

Moreover, she worked as a management consultant in the productions on Broadway: JAP (Acronym for Princesses Judeo American), a company founded in 2007 by four women that told the stories of several actors from the decades of 1950 and 1960 such as Totie Fields, Jean Carroll, Pearl Williams, Betty Walker and Belle Barth. In autumn of 2010, the web series aired on Yahoo! entitled “Stiller & Meara” produced by Red Hour Digital a company run by their son Ben Stiller, was started.

During her entire career, Anne appeared in various theatre plays including “A Month in the Country” (1956), “The House of Blue Leaves” (1971), “Anna Christie” (1993) and many others. In 2011, Meara agreed to participate in a work off-Broadway called “Love, Loss, What I Wore”.

Finally, in the personal life of the actress, she was married to the actor Jerry Stiller from 1954 until her passing, and they had a son, Ben Stiller and a daughter Amy Stiller. Meara died at age 85 from natural causes.
