As she had developed an early interest in theatre and cinema, when she studied at Stephens College in Missouri she enrolled in acting classes, and after graduating, she put all her efforts into becoming a successful actress.

Concerning her professional career, Potts debuted in the television film “Black Market Baby” in 1977, which was followed by a role in cinema in “Corvette Summer” (1978) produced by MGM, in which she starred opposite Mark Hamill, and her performance earned Potts a nomination for Golden Globe Award for the Best Motion Picture Acting Debut – Female. In 1982, her portrayal of a young woman married to a stock car driver in “Heartaches” was worth a Genie Award for the Best Foreign Actress, however, she is best known for playing the role of the receptionist Janine Melnitz in the film “Ghostbusters” (1984). which grossed $295.2 million in the box office.
