Antonio attended Cathedral High School, and during his time there suffered a benign tumor on his spine that affected his studies. He then moved to Theodore Roosevelt High School, and after matriculating, he attended East Los Angeles College before transferring to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He graduated with a degree in History in 1977 and while at college, was heavily active in various political groups. He later served as the president of the American Civil Liberties Union and the American Federation of Government Employees.
In 1990, Villaraigosa was appointed to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Board, and would serve there for four years. He was then elected to the California State Assembly, and would become Assembly Majority Leader within his first term, then in 1998 he would be chosen to become Speaker of the Assembly. In 2001, he tried his hand at campaigning for Mayor of Los Angeles but lost against James Hahn, so then campaigned for the Los Angeles City Council two years later, and won. In 2005, he tried his hand once again in the mayoral election and would win, becoming the 41st Mayor of Los Angeles, and the first Latino Mayor since 1972, and go on to be re-elected in 2009. Some of his projects during his tenure include working on extending the Purple Line subway, promoting the increase of gun control, and helping expand the LAPD and then created the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. He also increased taxes from the city’s trash collection fee to help put more officers on the streets. He also supported the LA Cleantech Incubator, and so would win several awards during his tenure, which included the Tom Bradley Legacy Foundation Achievement Award.
Antonio also travelled internationally while Mayor, making notable appearances in Asia, England and Israel. His tenure was also filled with controversies, and he was investigated for ethics violations. He was also criticized for his affiliation with the nutrition company Herbalife Ltd.
For his personal life, it is known that Villaraigosa married Corina Raigosa in 1987. They had two children and he also has two other children from previous relationships. They separated in 2007 after the public found out that he had an affair with television reporter Mirthala Salinas. He also had a relationship with 1994 Miss USA Lu Parker, which apparently continued until 2012.
