Luyendyk began his motor sport career in kart sport in 1992, and in which he was active until 1997. Subsequently, he switched to the Formula Ford category from 1998 to 2001, and among other things was also active in the US American Ford Formula series. He also took part in the Benelux Formula Ford in 1998, 1999 and 2001. In 2002, Luyendyk moved to the IRL Infiniti Pro Series to Luyendyk Racing, his father’s team. In 2008 the Pro Series was renamed again. For Andretti Green -AFS Racing, Luyendyk joined Raphael Matos in the Indy Lights. At the season finals in Joliet, he managed to win his first race in the Indy Lights, and eventually Luyendyk finished 4th overall in the championship. One year later, Luyendyk returned to the Indy Lights for four races in 2010, and with 7th place as his best result, he finished the season in 17th overall ranking.
