In the early 1990s, Arturo was a part of the Canadian National Team, and trained with the team to participate in the 1992 Summer Games, however, he decided to become a professional boxer, and made his debut in June ’91, and had five victories, against such boxers as Jose Gonzales, Francisco Aguiano and Joe Lafontant, among others, before his November ‘92 fight against against King Solomon which he lost. Arturo then traveled to Amsterdam, Netherlands for his next match, defeating Plawen Goutchew in the first round. Since then, his career went largely upwards until his retirement, as did his net worth.

The following year, he fought against Leon Bostic, and Pete Taliaferro, winning both in the first rounds, and with the latter the USBA junior lightweight title. He managed to defend his title on two occasions, defeating Richard Salazar and Jose Sanabria, which only increased his net worth. In 1995 he challenged Tracy Harris Patterson for the IBF Super Featherweight title, and won by judge decision. Upon victory, Arturo signed a contract with the HBO, and started appearing on HBO Boxing. The next year Arturo fought only twice, against Wilson Rodriguez and Feliciano Correa, winning both matches. He retained IBF Junior Title with victories against the defeated champion Tracy Harris Patterson, and Gabriel Ruelas. Unfortunately, he then recorded three consecutive losses, against Angel Manfredy and two against Ivan Robinson. In 2004, he won the WBC super lightweight title by defeating Gianluca Branco and retained title until 2005, defeating Leonard Doroftei and Jesse James Leija, but lost it to the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Before his retirement, Arturo also won the IBA welterweight title against Thomas Damgaard, but ended his career with a loss to Alfonso Gomez. Three years after his death, Gatti was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
