After matriculating from McCallum High School, he wanted to study at the University of Texas at Austin, but his plans changed when he was offered a film contract, and moved to Los Angeles and eventually graduated from the University of Southern California in 2002, with a Bachelor’s degree in Arts.

Concerning his professional career, he had guest roles in several television series including “Sliders” (1999) and “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” (2001), then received national attention for the first time when he was seen in the series “Six Feet Under” (2002). In the film industry, after an unnoticed role in the romantic adventure film “Holiday in the Sun” (2001) with the Olsen Twins, Nichols achieved success with a leading role in the independent film “The Utopian Society” (2003) directed and co-produced by John P. Aguirre. In 2004, Nichols targeted larger audiences, with supporting roles in the blockbuster “The Day After Tomorrow” written, produced and directed by Roland Emmerich, and in the romantic comedy “Wimbledon” directed by Richard Loncraine. Then he returned to television work temporarily, before appearing in the sports film “Glory Road” in 2006. Nichols was then seen in several small-scale films, and also had guest roles in several television series. In 2007, he seemed to make his breakthrough in the television industry, with the title role in the drama series “John from Cincinnati” aired on HBO, however, this series was removed after ten episodes. In 2008, he was added to the cast of “One Tree Hill” in the role of Julian Baker through 2012, and meanwhile played minor roles in television films “Prayers for Bobby” (2009) and “Five” (2011) as well as in feature films “Beautiful Boy” (2010), “Unthinkable” (2010) and “LOL” (2012).
