Barbara Levy Boxer was a daughter of Jewish parents Ira and Sophie Levy. She went to public schools, and in 1958 matriculated from George W. Wingate High School. Four years later, Barbara graduated with a Bachelors degree in Economics from Brooklyn College. Before launching her career in politics, Boxer worked as a stockbroker and journalist for the Pacific Sun, and in 1976 she was elected to the Marin County Board of Supervisors, and will be remembered as the first woman in that position.

In 1982, Boxer succeeded John Burton to the United States House of Representatives, representing California District 6 until 1993. Barbara was also a Congress member of the Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families, which was established in 1983. Boxer has been serving as a Senator from California since 1993, and was Chairwoman of the Senate Ethics Committee from 2007 to 2015, and Chairwoman of the Senate Environment Committee from 2007 to 2015.

Boxer founded the Excellence in Education award in 1997, to recognize teachers, parents, businesses and organizations that are helping in education. In 2003 and 2005, Boxer blocked oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She was a Sponsor of the Northern California Coastal Wild Heritage Wilderness Act and managed to pass the legislation that President George W. Bush signed into law in 2006. Barbara is a big supporter of reproductive rights and the pro-choice movement; she was against the joint resolution and the war in Iraq, voted for Emergency Economic Stabilization Act in 2008 and supported the health care reform bill in 2010. She is against reforming marijuana policy, but supports the same-sex marriage and opposed the Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment that forbids same-sex marriage in California. Boxer criticized former United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for her stance on Iraqi War and most recently endorsed Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee in the 2016 Presidential Election.

Boxer has written two novels, “A Time to Run” in 2005, and “Blind Trust” in 2009, which no doubt contributed to her net worth.

Regarding her personal life, Barbara Boxer married Stewart Boxer, an attorney, in 1962, and they later moved to Greenbrae, Marin County, California, and had two children. The Boxers sold their house in Greenbrae in 2006 and moved to Rancho Mirage.
