Although born in Encino, California, Berkeley grew up in Houston, Texas. He went to Westchester High School where he discovered his talents. His first known creation was the drawing named “Gesundheit”, in which a spaceman is outside his ship, and instead of the head, the spot was red painted, making it look like an explosion had happened. After high school matriculation, Berkeley found work in local newspapers, drawing “Filler” cartoons. Once in college, his connections broadened and he started creating “Bloom County”, a political satire, firstly published in college newspapers. Little by little his comic was becoming more and more popular, and his characters became real in a way of dolls, cartoons, and action heroes. Even more success came his way by the end of the ‘80s, when he created two most notable characters from the strip, Bill the Cat, and Opus the Penguin. His comic ended in 1989, but not before it earned Berkeley’s his first and so far only Pulitzer Prize.

He then used Opus the Penguin in the spin-off strip “Outland”, and then “Opus” (2003-2008). He revived “Bloom County” in 2015, and since then has been publishing on a regular basis.

Apart from comics, Berkeley has written and illustrated several children’s book, including “Edwurd Fudwupper Fibbed Bi”, which was made into a short film that Berkeley directed, and “Mars Needs Moms” (2007), which was also made into a film in 2011. For the book “Mars Needs Moms”, Berkeley won the Golden Duck Award for Excellence in Children’s Science Fiction. Then he has published “A Wish for Wings That Work: An Opus Christmas Story” (1991), and “Pete & Pickles” (2008), among others, the sales of which have only increased his wealth.

Regarding his personal life, Berkeley has been married to Heather Standish Wright since 2015. Previously, he was married to Jody Boyman from 1986 until 2013 – the couple has two children together.
