In 1970, the family moved a final time, this time to Macon, Georgia. There Berry attended high school, where he met Mike Mills. The two moved to Athens, Georgia in 1978, where they met Michael Stipe and Peter Buck, and together they formed the band REM in 1980.

In the early years the band built a considerable reputation, but the breakthrough to the general public didn’t come until the album “Out Of Time” in 1991, which topped the Billboard Top 100 as well as the main music charts in the UK and Netherlands; well known hits of the album include “Losing My Religion” and “Shiny Happy People”. In 1992, the album “Automatic for the People” was released, which was also very successful also taking the top positions in the above mentioned countries. Unfortunately, Bill collapsed during a concert due to a brain haemorrhage in 1995, and in 1997 he left the band, and he came on MTV news with the band to give a farewell interview in which he explained everything, and the next day they took part in an online chat on MSN.

After his departure, he had several meetings with his three friends in R.E.M. In 1999, he came onto the stage and hugged them. In 2003, he played two songs in the October 10 show in Raleigh, North Carolina, the last show of a tour consisting of 28 concerts. Less than six months later, he played again in a concert.

Finally, in the personal life of the musician, he is married to Cybele; the two have a son Owen who was born in 2003. Prior to this, he was married to Mar from 1986 to 1997.
