Björn is the son of Margaretha Borg and Rune; he spent his childhood in Södertälje and from a young age became interested in tennis after he was stunned by his father’s golden tennis racket, actually won playing table tennis. In 1972 he joined Sweden’s Davis Cup team against Netherlands, and won his debut match by defeating Onny Parun in five sets. The same year he won his Wimbledon junior singles title, then in 1973 became a professional. In his rookie year, Björn finished the season as No. 18 after several notable results, including being the runner-up at the Monte Carlo Open, losing to Ille Nastase in the finals, and also reached the fourth round of the French Open, starting as unseeded.

The following year was his breakthrough year, as he won his first French Open title and seven other singles titles, including in London, Boston and Adelaide.
