Kevoian attended California State University, Long Beach and graduated in 1973 with a degree in Eastern Philosophy and Literature. The following year he started his internship at a small LA radio station. He also worked for the children show choir group called The Young Americans as a sound engineer and spent three years touring the country with the group. In 1979 he started to work at WMBN, a radio station in Petoskey, Michigan, and three years after he transferred to WJML in the Michigan town of Kingsley. He also took an additional job as a bartender in a Harbor Springs bar. Here he met Tom Griswold, who was looking for a new station after his year spent working in Florida. Griswold was soon hired as the program director at Kevoian’s station, and eventually the two teamed up and started their morning show “The Bob and Tom Show”. The program became extremely successful which led the hosts to appear at the Superstars Convention along with 300 station representatives. Once their compilation of bits was heard, they started to receive various offers from all around the country.
In 1983 Kevoian, along with his partner Griswold, moved to Indiana and established their comedy-based show at radio station WFBQ “Q95” based in Indianapolis. The show eventually got additional hosts Chick McGee, Kristi Lee and Dean Metcalf, and the popularity of their show grew increasingly, becoming a nationally syndicated program in 1995, transmitted by over 150 stations across the country. “The Bob and Tom Show” became one of the highest-rated radio programs in the country, heard by over five million listeners, and enabled Kevoian to earn a significant net worth. The show is a mixture of comedy, parody, talk, news and sports; it frequently interviews various guests such as touring comedians, athletes, musicians, actors and sometimes politicians.
“The Bob and Tom Show” has produced over 50 compilation CDs and DVDs. Kevoian wrote a number of lyrics and music for the show’s parodies. The show was eventually re-purposed as an overnight show called “Bob and Tom All Nighter”; from 2008 to 2010 “The Bob and Tom Show” was even aired as a television program on WGN America channel.
Over the years, the two show’s stars also made tours around the USA, called The Bob and Tom Radio Comedy Tours.
Kevoian has received various honors and won a number of awards, including five Marconi Awards.
In 2015 Kevoian was inducted to the National Radio Hall of Fame at the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago. At the occasion, he gave a speech announcing his retirement at the end of the year. He stated that once retired, he wanted to focus on traveling with his wife. Kevoian hosted his last show in mid-December.
Speaking about Kevoian’s private life, he married Becky Martin in 2005. The couple has one son, and Kevoian has two stepsons from Becky’s previous marriage.
Through his show, Kevoian has been involved in philanthropy, raising money for various charities, which often were the subject of his show. He and Griswold once wagered with former Indianapolis Colts player Jeff Saturday that they would donate $10,000 to a charity of Saturday’s choice, if the player ever made a touchdown. When Saturday scored, the radio partners donated $5,000 each to People’s Burn Foundation of Indiana and Kid’s Voice of Indiana, Inc.
