Haywood grew up under the care of his mother, moving around New York before moving south. He attended B. Dudley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he is now on the honour roll. At seven feet tall he was a basketball natural, and won North Carolina Basketball Player of the Year in his senior year.
Haywood matriculated to the University of North Carolina in 1997, taking centre position on the school team, the Tar Heels. In the NCAA tournament, the Tar Heels reached the final four teams, in 2000. He graduated with a degree in communications.
Upon leaving college in 2001, Haywood joined the Cleveland Cavaliers, picked 20th in the first round of the NBA Draft. He was quickly moved to the Orlando Magic, and then was traded on to the Washington Wizards, the team with which he made his pro debut. He would stay with the Wizards for almost a decade, playing starting centre.
In February of 2010, Haywood moved to the Dallas Mavericks, and is reported to have signed a contract with the team worth $55 million, greatly contributing to his overall wealth. Two years later, whilst signed to the Charlotte Bobcats, he suffered a fractured foot, and missed the 2013 season due to his injury. During this absence, he hosted a radio show on Sports Radio 610 AM WNFZ, adding somewhat to his net worth.
In 2014, Haywood returned to where he had begun, the Cleveland Cavaliers, remaining until 2015, when he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers, although he would not go on to play with the team, being released after a week. He is now a television commentator and basketball analyst. In the regular season, over the course of his playing career, he played in 816 games, starting in 549. His points per game average was 6.8, with an average of four steals, and five assists.
In his personal life, Haywood keeps himself fairly private. He has stated that in his spare time, he enjoys reading. He cited his mother as having had an enormous influence on the success of his athletic career, along with his high school coach, David Price. There is little to no information readily available regarding his relationship status. On his official website, Haywood describes himself as an analyst, radio show host, and a philanthropist. He established a fund to assist single parent families, a case close to his heart and own personal experience. His initial contribution to the fund was $25,000. He said on the issue: “My mother raised me as a single parent and she worked twice as hard to make sure I always had the things I needed… I’ve seen other children from single parent families who haven’t been as fortunate as me”. He has also participated in various other charitable causes. As a child, he played the saxophone.
