Brian Anthony Boitano Wiki Biography

Brain Anthony Boitano was born on the 22nd October 1963, in Mountain View, California, USA, and is a former professional figure skater, best known for being the 1988 Winter Olympics Gold Medalist, as well as two times World Champion in 1986 and 1988, and U.S. National Champion between 1985 and 1988.

Have you ever wondered how much wealth this Olympic Champion has accumulated so far? How rich Brian Boitano is? According to sources, it is estimated that the total amount of Brian Boitano’s net worth, as of early 2017, is over $18 million, acquired initially through his professional skating career which was active between 1979 and 1988, and subsequently through involvement behind the scenes.

Boitano was born to Donna and Lew, and attended Marian A. Peterson High School in Sunnyvale, California. His passion for ice skating dates back to the early age of eight, when he began taking skating lessons. Under the careful guidance of Linda Leaver, who remained his only skating coach during his career, Boitano debuted at the 1978 World Junior Figure Skating Championship in which he won te bronze medal. The following year he turned pro, and in 1980 won two more bronze medals, at the Grand Prix International St. Gervais completion as well as at the Nobelhorn Trophy competition, both held in Germany. These achievements provided the basis for Brian Boitano’s net worth.

In 1982, Boitano entered the history books as the first American who performed the first ever complex triple axel; later that year, he won another bronze medal, this time at Skate America international figure skating competition, and his first gold medal came later that year at Skate Canada International. At the 1984 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia (Bosnia and Herzegovina nowadays), his first Olympics, Boitano finished fifth. This was followed by a gold medal at US Figure Skating Championships four years in a row, between 1985 and 1988. In the same period, Boitano also won several other titles, such as the St. Ivel International, NHK Trophy and Skate America as well as more notably two World Figure Skating Championships gold medals, in 1986 and in 1988. In 1987, Boitano introduced his new, signature jump “Tano triple lutz”, entirely invented by him. All these accomplishments helped Brian Boitano to massively increase the overall size of his net worth.

However, the biggest success in Boitano’s professional skating career occurred in the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where he won the Gold Medal, and later that year, he won his second World Figure Skating Championships gold medal. It is certain that these ventures dramatically increased Boitano’s revenues.

Shortly after these successes, Boitano retired from his professional career. However, due to a clause introduced in 1993 by the International Skating Union, also known as the “Boitano Rule”, which allowed retired professional athletes to return to competitions as “amateurs”, Boitano returned to figure skating. In 1994 Skate America he won the silver medal and earned his place at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway in which he ended sixth after which he permanently retired from his skating career.

In 1995, Boitano founded White Canvas Productions, which has created almost a dozen on-ice shows and specials so far.

Brian Boitano was a USA delegation member of the figure skating national team at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Apart from all those already mentioned above, Boitano has skated in several TV specials, including “Carmen on Ice” for which he was honored with a prestigious Emmy Award in 1990. In 2009, Boitano featured in “What Would Brian Boitano Make?” – Food Network’s cooking show in which, during its two seasons, Brian prepared meals for his friends. Besides all these, Boitano has released two books, “Boitano’s Edge: Inside the Real World of Figure Skating”, an autobiography released in 1997 as well as “What Would Brian Boitano Make?: Fresh And Fun Recipes For Sharing With Family And Friends”, released in 2013 in addition to his cooking show. Doubtlessly, these ventures have only helped Brian Boitano to further increase his respectable net worth.

When it comes to his personal life, Brain Boitano came out as gay in 2013, in order to scold Russian anti-gay propaganda just before the 2014 Winter Olympics. He is the co-founder of the National Safe Kids Campaign Entertainment Alliance and the founder on San Francisco based non-profit organization Youth Skate. He is also the Public Awareness Council of the American Cancer Society’s member.

1So the programs all start to all look the same. I watched one free skating competition, and I thought I was watching a short program. Everyone was doing exactly the same elements.
2Sasha gets a raw deal from the press. She makes one mistake in her program and people rip her for not pulling it off when it counts. But she never falls apart. She never just completely folds and misses everything. Usually it's just one mistake.
3The Olympics are great for notoriety right off the bat, but your body of work is what people remember you for.
4Kat and I were in our 20s when we won in '88. Our personalities were already established. We were ready to move on to a life of professional skating.
5Plus the public's attention span is so short right now, if a skater doesn't strike while the iron is hot... well it's not like people will forget you, but they just won't care anymore.
6I have to consider my greatest accomplishments winning the Olympics because everything that I've done after that is really because of the Olympics.
7Yeah, I am a little bit, and I think it is a natural progression of the sport, of going upwards in technical ability and everything like that.
8The U.S. Olympic spirit award is an award that is given to an athlete who embodies the Olympic spirit in more ways than just on the playing field, in showing incredible perseverance, in overcoming obstacles, and what we wanted to do is have everybody can vote on-line.
9That's what amateur skating is about, technical expertise, and it should always stay that way.
