Bryan Ferry Net Worth $50 Million

Bryan grew up in a working class family; his father was a farm worker and also looked after pit ponies. Bryan went to Washington Grammar-Technical School, after which he enrolled at Durham University, but after one year transferred to Newcastle University, where he studied fine art from 1964 until 1968. While at the University, Bryan was a part of the student band -the City Blues – and then started teaching pottery at Holland Park School in London. His musical aspirations also increased during this time, and he started the band Banshees, and then when he met Graham Simpson and John Porter started the band the Gas Board. He and his friends then pursued a full-time career in music.

Soon Roxy Music was formed, with Simpson still being the part of the group, Bryan added saxophonist/oboist Andy Mackay, Brian Eno on synthesizer, Dexter Lloyd who was soon replaced by Paul Thompson and then Phil Manzanera, before even the first studio album was released. The band achieved enormous success until the mid- ‘70s, with such albums as “Roxy Music” (1972), “Four Your Pleasure” (1973), “Stranded” (1973) – which became their first No. 1 album – then “Country Life” (1974) and “Siren” (1975). All albums achieved gold status in the UK, which increased Bryan’s net worth to a large degree. After the tour for the “Siren” ended, Roxy Music disbanded, but reunited in 1979, and recorded three more albums – “Manifesto” (1979), “Flesh and Blood” (1980) and “Avalon” (1982) – before eventually going on hiatus again. “Avalon”, was the last album released by the Roxy Music; it topped the charts in the UK, and achieved platinum status in both USA and UK, while “Flesh and Blood” achieved platinum status only in UK.

To speak of Bryan’s solo career; he released his debut solo album in 1973, entitled “These Foolish Things” (1973), achieving gold status in the UK, Despite being a part of Roxy Music, Bryan was also devoted to his solo career, and has enjoyed success ever since the release of his debut album. During the ‘70s, he had several other successful releases, including “Another Time, Another Place” (1974), “Let’s Stick Together” (1976), “In Your Mind” (1977) and “The Bride Stripped Bare” (1978). He took a break from his solo career as Roxy Music reformed, but returned to the rock scene as a solo artist with the platinum album “Boys and Girls” (1985), which was to prove his only No. 1 album. He remains active until the present day, and has released nine albums since the mid- ‘80s, including “Taxi” (1993), “As Time Goes By” (1999), “Frantic” (2002), “Dylanesque” (2007), and most recently “Avonmore” (2014), the sales of which have added a significant amount to his wealth.

Thanks to his contribution to music, Bryan was made a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours on the 11th June 2011.

Regarding his personal life, Bryan became known for his high profile relationships; aside from his two marriages to Margaret Mary “Lucy” Helmore – which lasted from 1982 until 2003, and with whom he has four sons – and to Amanda Sheppard from 2012 until 2013 when the couple separated, Bryan has dated several celebrities, including Jerry Hall and Amanda Lear, among others.

1Sophisticated lyrics and lush productions
2His debonair dress sense and immaculate suits
3His unique quivering croon
1I think Eton's a fantastic school and every time I do an interview in England people are obsessed by that, by class division, and I think it's a terrible thing. I came from a very poor family and I worked very hard and tried to make good work all my life. And there are certain rewards from doing things like that. I had a lot of determination, of course, and a little bit of talent and I made something of my life which was different from what I'd been born into.
2It's great to write stuff, but I think it's pretty universal that at a certain point, people write less and less. And that's sad. Because I remember loving it when I found the right phrase to go with a piece of music. And I do that less and less. I haven't stopped writing, but it's just slower.
3Making music for a living is quite hard. With every album you have to reinvent the wheel, reinvent Tabasco or HP Sauce. You have to do it again and again and people are quite unforgiving if you don't do your best work. It's like exams. You're only as good as the last record.
4You know, we were poor, and I thought I was poor, but in many ways my life was easy. My education was funded by the State, I went to a really nice northern grammar school, and then I went to university on a full grant. I was nurtured. I have nothing to kick against.
5It's good to have layers in your life. If I'm in a limousine on the way to the airport, I still haven't forgotten what it is like to stand in the rain at a north-eastern bus stop for hours. I do have memories of deprivation, but I don't carry them around like some bitter, left-wing hammer to beat people on the head with. The human experience is all about contrast.
6[on his political beliefs] Never was anything really. Never really voted. Always lived in a huge majority where I don't think my vote would have made much difference. Where I was born it was a 23,000 Labour majority and now I live in a similar Tory majority. But yes, I am conservative by nature so it would be fair to say I was supporting them now. That said, I always felt politics and art don't mix very well.
7I heard Dylan [Bob Dylan] when he first came out, and I remember seeing people wandering around with his album under their arms. But at that time I wasn't into . . . folk music: "Oh, acoustic guitars?". It was not my thing. I was very much into Otis Redding, soul music, Stax, Motown. And guitars had to be electric for me, to be exciting.
8[on recording cover versions of classic songs] I like my own lyrics, but I don't write as prolifically as I would like to. So that's probably why I went into the whole world of interpretation.
9I like quality things. Yes, I do have a vast wardrobe, but it's certainly not on the Elton John scale.
10[on T.S. Eliot] When I started reading Eliot, I really felt incredibly close to some of the things I read. I could feel this. It's fabulous when you do that, when you discover somebody who you like, when you kind of feel those feelings, even though he articulates them better. He would probably be my favorite poet. Some of it is really beautiful and sad, haunting. Words can be very powerful. I find them very difficult.
11[on Jimi Hendrix] He was the best guitar player and had a great look and a great attitude. I saw him play when I was a student. I was very impressed. Very influenced.
12[on Brian Eno] I'm much more serious than him. He loves to talk! He has to talk the talk. And I tend to rather sit and watch more. That's where the main difference is. But we're both self-centered. I think we both think the world revolves around us.
13[on recording Bob Dylan songs] As far as the words are concerned it's a bit like an actor tackling Shakespeare (William Shakespeare). I like finding the melodies that Dylan's hidden away in there.
14[on playing Live Aid (1985)] I have terrible memories of it all going wrong. I'd put together an all-star band and the set was fraught with problems. We had David Gilmour on guitar and, poor David, his guitar wasn't working for the first couple of songs. With his first hit, the drummer put his stick through the drum skin. And then my microphone wasn't working, which for a singer is a bit of a handicap. A roadie ran on with another mic so then I was holding two mics taped together and I wasn't really sure which one to sing into. It was a great day though.
15The older I get the less I know about women. They are completely infallible and totally impossible.
1Roxy Music re-formed and started their first world tour since 1983. [June 2001]
2He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2011 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to music.
3Lives in Petworth, United Kingdom.
4Winner of the BMI (Broadcast Music Inc.) Icon Award in 2008.
5His song "More Than This" was recorded by Norah Jones on the Charlie Hunter Quartet's album "Songs from the Analog Playground" (released in 2001).
6One of David Bowie's favorite songwriters. Bowie has described Ferry as one of the best lyricists in British music.
7Lives together with Katie Turner, a dancer he got to know during Roxy Music's 2001 concert tour.
8Became the face of Mark & Spencer's clothing range "Autograph" (October 2006).
9His song "The Way You Do" was recorded by Anni-Frid Lyngstad on her solo album "Something's Going On" (released in 1982).
10His song "Going Strong" was recorded by Roger Daltrey on his solo album "Parting Should Be Painless" (released in 1984).
11Winner of the 2004 Q Lifetime Achievement Award (as a member of Roxy Music).
12Winner of the 2003 Ivor Novello Award for outstanding contribution to British music.
13Ferry was frequently ridiculed in issues of the New Musical Express in the 1970s. This came about after Ferry reportedly took exception to the manner in which he was interviewed by journalists from the magazine. In return, variations on the spelling of Ferry's name became a commonplace joke in articles. Ironically, Roxy Music was one of the most popular bands with NME journalists.
14Kar-Wai Wong credits his rendition of the standard "I'm in the Mood for Love" as the inspiration for the English title of his film In the Mood for Love (2000).
15Sons Otis, born 1 November 1982 and Isaac, born 16 May 1985.
16Ferry's son Otis was arrested while attempting to plaster pro-hunting stickers over the windows of British Prime Minister Tony Blair's house during a protest in support of fox hunting. (3 August 2002).
17Sons: Otis, Isaac, Tara, Merlin.
18Married 22-year-old Lucy Helmore at the Church of St. Anthony and St. George at Duncton, West Sussex, England, UK.
19Dated model Jerry Hall in the 1970s, which explains her appearance on the cover of Roxy Music's 1975 album "Siren". Ferry and Hall were still dating in the late '70s when Hall met Mick Jagger for the first time, eventually leading to their long relationship and four children together.
20Lead singer and keyboardist of Roxy Music.
