He fell in love with surfing from an early age, and since he was living near the beach, it was easy for him to start developing surfing skills from when he was a young boy., and made his competitive surfing debut in 1989 in the Open Boys final. His love continued to grow, and the following year he was a part of the national competition and ended as the second best surfer.
In the next few years, C.J. was building a name for himself in amateur competitive events, and then in 1998 he was selected as the model for the new National Scholastic Surfing Association logo.
His professional career started the next year, and he immediately dominated the Association Surfer Professionals World tour, winning the Rookie of the Year Award.
