This was due to the fact that her father was a Geologist who was responsible for various petroleum explorations. Eventually the family settled, and she would go on and attend the University of Colorado at Boulder. Around this time, she was already working for the Ford modelling agency, which helped her become a part of the Johnny Walker Scotch campaign. She then moved to New York City to continue her career and found popularity there, becoming a model for Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. She was also featured in various fashion magazines during this time. Lowell then studied at New York University, and the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre.

After playing a supporting role in the film “Sleepless in Seattle” which starred Tom Hanks, she became the District Attorney Jamie Ross for “Law & Order” series for five years, and reprised the role in the spin-off “Law & Order: Trial by Jury”, as wel as playing the character in “Homicide: Life on the Street”. Afterwards, she decided to focus more on documentary filming, while attending New York University. She stopped doing acting roles, but later returned to do a voice-over as an ode to her “Licence to Kill” character for the video game “007 Legends”.

For her personal life, it is known that Carey has married three times, firstly to fashion photographer John Stember from 1984 to 1988, then to actor Griffin Dunne in 1989 and they had a daughter before divorcing 1995.
