Concerning his professional playing days, Carlos Peña began his career with the Texas Rangers after his selection in the first round of the draft in 1998. He first played in various farm teams of this franchise before the 2002 season, when he was transferred to the Oakland Athletics, for whom he played in 40 games during the season, before then moving to the Detroit Tigers. The following year, he managed to improve his statistics to 27 home runs and 82 RBI, with a batting average of just under .250. In 2005, he was transferred to the AAA team, but returned to the MLB in the middle of the summer, producing a significantly better statistical average. For the 2006 season he was transferred to New York Yankees where he dissolved his contract, and as a free agent moved to the Boston Red Sox.
