The early years of Caroline’s life were spent in the White House, when her father was serving as the US president. After his death the family established their life in New York City, but in 1968 they were again shattered with the assassination of their uncle Robert F. Kennedy, the United States Senator, and Caroline’s mother became frightened for the safety of her children and the family flew out of the country. Caroline’s mother married Aristotle Onassis, a Greek shipping magnate, but Caroline could not accept him as her father, which eventually led to tensions in the family. It was during this period when Caroline turned to her uncle, US Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy, for comfort and became very close to him.
Caroline graduated from Harvard with a BA degree, and then from Columbia Law School with a Juris Doctorate. During her studies, she also worked as a photographer’s assistant, and as an intern at the New York News. Since graduation, Caroline Kennedy has been a prominent board member of a number of public and non-profit organizations, including for the New York Board of Education, the Fund for Public Schools, and the Concord Academy board of trustees.
In collaboration with Ellen Alderman she penned the book, “In Our Defense: The Bill of Rights In Action”. published in1991, which highlighted the reasons for framing the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution (no search or arrest of persons without due cause).
In December 2008, she expressed her interest in the US Senate seat that was occupied by Hillary Rodham Clinton, but did not proceed to formal nomination. Instead, she supported and worked for subsequent president Barack Obama, and again during his re-election campaign of 2012. She was nominated to be the US Ambassador to Japan by President Barack Obama in 2013, as usual formally agreed to by the Japanese government.
In her personal life, Caroline was very close to her brother John, especially after their mother’s death in 1994. John died in a plane crash in 1999, meaning Caroline was now the only remaining survivor of the Kennedy Family. In 1986 she married Edwin Schlossberg and they have two daughters and a son.
