Mears celebrated his NASCAR debut in the Busch Grand National Series in 2001, on the Homestead Miami Speedway in the car with the number 66 for Cicci-Welliver Racing. From 21st place on the grid he finished the race in 28th position. After selling the team to Wayne Jesel, Mears drove the entire next season for the team, and with two results in the top 10, he finished 21st in the championship.
