Haley attended William Campbell high school, and upon matriculating, he enrolled in James Madison University where he became a starter for the James Madison Dukes team, winning All-American selection twice.

In 1986 he was selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Beginning his career as a left outside linebacker, Haley led the 49ers in sacks during his six seasons with the team, with 12 sacks in his rookie season and 16 sacks in 1990. He eventually became the team’s pass rusher. During his rookie season, Pro-Football Weekly and United Press International voted him All-Rookie. In 1990 he was awarded UPI NFC Defensive Player of the Year. The same year he was selected for the All-Pro game. Playing for the San Francisco 49ers, Haley won two Super Bowl Championships in 1989 and ’90, and earned considerable net worth.

Due to a personal conflict with the team’s coach and a physical conflict with one of the players, Haley was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 1992. He played as a right defensive end, adding two more double-digit seasons in sacks. During his time with the Cowboys, Haley was awarded his second UPI NFC Defensive Player of the Year and was selected All-Pro once again. He won three more Super Bowl Championships in 1992, ’93 and ’95, and his wealth was boosted accordingly. However, in 1996 Haley suffered a back injury, and surgery forced him into temporary retirement from his football career.

Two years later he resigned with the San Francisco 49ers, playing as a backup defensive end for two games during the playoffs. In 1999 he returned to play one final season with the team, intensifying his fortune once again.

Upon retiring, Haley had amassed 100.5 career sacks, becoming a member of the 100 Sacks Club.
Haley played in seven NFC title games during an eight-season span with the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys, earning a reputation as one of the fiercest players. Named Defensive Player of the Year and All-Pro two times, Haley has been the only player in the NFL history to be selected to five Pro Bowls.

In retirement, Haley then became an assistant defensive coach for the Detroit Lions in 2001. In 2006 he was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. In 2011 he was enshrined into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor and inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame the same year. In 2012 he became an inductee into the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame, and finally in 2015, he was inducted into the Pro-Football Hall of Fame.

When it comes to his personali life, the former player was married to history teacher Karen Haley, but after having four children together, the couple divorced after 13 years of marriage. Haley was diagnosed with bipolar disorder around the time of his retirement. He has taken medicine and undergone therapy since and, reportedly, his condition has greatly improved over the years. He is now willing to reach out and help others with the same issue.

Haley devotes much of his time to help fund various local initiatives and also mentors rookies of his two former teams, the 49ers and the Cowboys. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at James Madison University.
