Charles attended the State University, Missouri where he studied journalism. After graduating, he started his career in Springfield, Missouri working at KICK in 1963. He also worked as a sideline reporter on television, then went to the now defunct WFAA which was located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. He continued with work for various radio stations in Washington, DC, including WWDC and WTOP, until in the early 1970s, he joined WNBC in New York City. He first worked for the weekend program “Monitor” as a news reader, before getting his most prominent role as a sidekick to Don Imus. “Imus in the Morning” became very popular and was syndicated through numerous stations across the US.
