Unfortunately little is known about Chu’s early life and growing up in the whole, except that the family left Vietnam in 1975, and moved to Hawaii and then New York City. After finishing high school, Chinh enrolled at the University of Buffalo, from which he graduated in 1988 with a BS degree in finance, finishing his studies with summa cum laude.
After his education, Chinh found a job at Salomon Brothers in the Mergers & Acquisitions Department. After four years working for the Salomon Brothers, he moved forward to Blackstone in 1990. He consistently rose through ranks in the private equity firm, and assumed several leading positions, which increased his wealth to a large degree.
He now serves as lead investor of the group, and has been in charge of several successful investments which have included Stiefel Laboratories, Biomet, Alliant, ReAble Therapeutics, SunGard Data, among many others, which only further increased his net worth.
Apart from Blackstone, Chu has also worked in several other companies, including Graham Packaging Company, Inc, becoming their Chairman, President, Assistant Secretary and Chairman of Compensation Committee. Furthermore, he is member of the Compensation and Leadership Committee and Finance Committee, while also joining the board of directors at Freescale Semiconductor in 2011.
He owns the 89th and half of the 90th floor at Trump World Tower, where his firm is located. He wanted to buy the entirety of the 90th floor, however he was unsuccessful in his attempt.

Regarding his personal life, Chinh is married to Ha Phuong, a Vietnamese singer, and they have a daughter.
