While in high school, Atkins was a sailing instructor and lifeguard. He had no interest or experience in acting prior to his role in “The Blue Lagoon”, but happened to know an agent who persuaded him to audition, and he won despite competing against 2,000 other hopefuls. He starred in the film alongside Brooke Shields who in the movie played his cousin, the two being marooned as children in a tropical paradise and eventually falling in love. It became a box office hit, and led to more opportunities for Christopher. It also gave him a significant boost in net worth.

Atkins then starred in “The Pirate Movie” alongside Kristy McNichol, in which he had to sing “How Can I Live Without Her”, which surprisingly reached the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982. The following year, he was cast in “A Night in Heaven”, playing the overconfident Rick Monroe. He also had a one season recurring role in “Dallas” as Peter Richards, a swimming instructor, a character who had an affair with Sue Ellen Ewing. During the peak of his popularity, Atkins was invited to become part of numerous commercials including for Adidas and Coke, and he was also featured on the cover of numerous teen magazines.

Throughout the 1990s up to the 2000s, he began appearing in numerous television movies; some of the projects he was a part of include “Tequila Express”, “Fatal Charms”, “True Legends of the West”, and “Angel Flight Dawn”. He also had comic roles in “Shoot” and “Mortuary Academy”, before reuniting with Brooke Shields in the series “Suddenly Susan”, in which he played a fellow journalist. All these boosted his net worth.

In 2007, Christopher starred in the movie “100 Million BC” which went straight to DVD. He also appeared in the reality show “Confessions of a Teen Idol”, which also featured numerous other former teen idols.

Giving up on acting, Atkins then went on to focus on business, among other interests patenting a fishing lure. He then opened his own outdoor sports company which continued to help increase his net worth.

For his work in “The Blue Lagoon”, he earned a Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year. He was also nominated for Best Young Actor in the Young Artist Awards. VH1 ranks him as one of the 100 Greatest Teen Stars.

Well, sometimes when you say you want to be like everybody else, you're really saying that you're not.
Usually I get recognized for The Blue Lagoon or Dallas.
They built these little tanning booths for Brooke and I to do nothing but lay down and tan all over.
There are times when directors just don't know what they're doing.
I had a lot of coaching for the movie and no, I have never sung professionally before.
I think the United States is way behind the times.
As much as I didn't want to change, lifestyles do change.
Who cares who comes out of the closet or not, so long as you're happy?
The guy who owned that island was from Oregon and he decided that he wanted to have an Oregon feeling to it, so he planted pine trees all over the place!
I figured that, if you do a vampire movie in Hollywood, you've made it.
Brooke was special in the sense that we grew up together on that island.
Hollywood wants press, any kind of press.
I thought that would be kind of cool, to make a bad guy look sympathetic.
Brooke might tell a different story, but I've always loved the water.
I'm really a romantic at heart.
Larry Hagman was a huge star, and he was carrying my stuff for me.
One of my favorite stories is my first kissing scene with Linda Gray.
You know, I never expected to enter the movie business.
Let me tell you something: if you're on an island for three and a half months and you're four and a half hours by boat from the nearest store, and there's nobody but 30 crew members on the island, I guarantee that you'd be running around without your clothes on.
We also shot at a location that was an Aboriginal sacred ground for the shots coming up the cliff.
I became a very angry person and it was all due to alcoholism.
I've been a scuba diver since I was 16 and I think that was one of the reasons they chose me.
I sat backstage and had a beer with Richard Chamberlain, Paul Newman, and Princess Grace.
I truly, truly believe that I was going in that direction and all of a sudden fate took me and put me here. It's like something else has other plans for me.
It's only in the United States that they make a big deal about nudity.
I'm a very big believer in fate.
I wanted to be a doctor in sports medicine; I was into sailing and all that sort of thing.
I always wondered if I was supposed to be excellent at something or not. I think, because of that, I have a lot of insecurities about myself.
Everybody wants to be like everybody else.
I couldn't go anywhere. I had my hair pulled and my clothes ripped off of me several times. To this day, people still recognize me. I'm still fighting the image I have from The Blue Lagoon (1980).
I'm trying to peek my head back into pictures.
I really did drop out to become a dad. It's so much fun having the little knuckleheads around.
