Gregg’s family frequently moved during his childhood and teenage years, and he had lived in numerous cities by his adulthood. After attending a high school in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, he enrolled in at Ohio Wesleyan University. Two years later he dropped out and moved to Manhattan, where he worked as a bar back, security guard and restaurant parking valet. He then enrolled in New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts to study Drama and English.

While at college, Gregg co-founded off-Broadway non-profit Atlantic Theater Company, in which he later served as artistic director. He started his professional acting career in the late ’80s, taking minor roles in the films “Lip Service”, “Things Change” and “Fat Man and Little Boy”. He went on to land small parts in the ’90s films such as “I Love Trouble”, “The Usual Suspects”, “Above Suspicion”, “The Spanish Prisoner”, “Six Ways to Sunday” and “Magnolia”. He also made guest appearances in ’90s television series’, including “Law and Order”, “Shannon’s Deal”, “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles”, “The Commish” and “Touched by an Angel”. All supported his net worth.

The early 2000s saw Gregg in the films “Lovely & Amazing”, “The Human Stain” and “In Good Company”. He made several guest appearances in popular television series such as “Sex and the City”, “Sports Night”, “The Practice”, “Will & Grace”, “The Shield” and “The West Wing”. He also wrote the screenplay for the 2000 thriller-horror film “What Lies Between”. His net worth started to rise.

In 2006 Gregg was cast with a starring role in the television series “The New Adventures of Old Christine”, along with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, playing her character’s ex-husband. The series, which aired until 2010, greatly contributed to Gregg’s popularity and to his net worth as well.

In 2008 he served as the director and screenwriter of the black comedy film “Choke”, in which he played Lord High Charlie. The same year he was cast in the role of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film “Iron Man”. Two years later he reprized the role in the “Iron Man 2”. In 2011 he played agent Coulson in the film “Thor”, and in “The Avangers” the following year, winning a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor for the latter film. Additionally, Gregg starred in Marvel short films, the 2011 ” Marvel One-Shot: The Consultant” and “Marvel One-Shot: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer “. In the meantime, he also appeared in various films, including “(500) Days of Summer”, “Mr. Popper’s Penguins”, “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Light Years”.

In 2012 he provided voice for agent Coulson’s character in the animated television series “Ultimate Spider-Man”.
