Cory is the son of former world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks, and the nephew of former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion, Michael Spinks. At the age of 17, Cory experienced a life-threatening incident, when he suffered from gunshot wounds to the torso, but managed a complete recovery, and didn’t stop him from pursuing his dream career and following his father’s footsteps. He became a professional boxer in 1997, having won the National Golden Gloves and National Police Athletic League welterweight titles that year after posting a 78-3 record in the amateur ranks.
Cory won 29 out of 31 of his first contests, and rose to stardom by winning the WBC, WBA, IBF, The Ring and lineal welterweight titles in December 2003. His first welterweight title defense was against former world champion Zab Judah in April 2004, whom he defeated, and then fought against him one more time in February the following year; this turned out to be one of the biggest events in St. Louis, as it sold more than 22 000 tickets and rapper Nelly accompanied Spinks to the ring, while leading the crowd with his singing, however, Spinks was defeated. Nevertheless, Cory’s fifth world title – the IBF Junior Middleweight Championship – came in 2006, when he fought against Roman Karmazin. He then moved up to Middleweight in May 2007, with a challenge against Jermain Taylor, who managed to hold the title of the World Middleweight Champion. A year later, Spinks lost the IBF Junior Middleweight Championship, but reclaimed the title in April 2009 in his hometown. In January 2012, Cory became the no.1 contender for Bundrage’s IBF Junior Middleweight Title.
