Woody attended Patrick Henry High School in Ashland, Virginia, becoming a member of the school’s football team, the Patrick Henry Patriots, whom he helped to win the State Championship in 1994. Woody was selected in the first round as the 17th overall pick by the New England Patriots in the 1999 NFL Draft. Being selected as a center, he started all 16 regular season games in his first season with the team, but would later switch to guard and also to tackle. Despite struggling with delivering the snap in the shotgun formation, Woody established himself as a valuable player.
