Dave is the youngest of eight children in the family. Together with his older brother Ray, he was influenced by various musical styles in the house including music hall, jazz, rock n’ roll and many others. Being interested in music from an early age, Davies began playing skiffle, then bought an electric guitar to experiment with rock music. As a teenager, along with his brother and friends, Dave would organize jam sessions in their house, which would often become large parties with his parents, singing and playing piano together. This period significantly influenced Davies’ later musical orientation and style of play. In 1963, together with Pete Quaife, the brothers founded „the Kinks“, in which Ray was the leader and best known member of the band.

Although the band eventually had four members, Dave and Ray remained the only steady members. As the band’s guitarist, Dave often stayed out of the spotlight, occasionally serving as lead vocalist and songwriter. He was solely responsible for the distinctive power chord sound on „You Really Got Me“, the Kinks’ first hit which topped the UK and USA hits – it was one of the first mainstream appearances of guitar distortion, having a big influence on later genres such as punk rock and heavy metal.

In the following years the Kinks performed and toured intensely. However, during these tours there often occured incidents such as in the Capitol Theatre, Cardiff in May 1965 when drummer Mick Avory and Dave Davies started a conflict which resulted in an on-stage fight. By the late ’60s the band had notably evolved, and Dave started released solo singles with success in Britain, although hardly reaching the US. In 1967 he positioned as no.3 on the UK charts with the song „Death of a Clown“, which was also included on the Kinks’ LP. Another single of his – „Susannah’s Still Alive“ – also achieved good results and was well accepted by the public. However, it wasn’t until the ’80s that Dave finally started a solo career by releasing a series of rock albums and demos. Although at the time his work didn’t gain much critical acclaim, it was well-noted on „Unfinished Business: Dave Davies Kronikles 1963-1998“ released in the late ’90s.

In 2002 he released his first album of new material called „The hard-rocking Bug“. Having suffered from a stroke in 2004, his illness and recovery inspired his song „God in My Brain“, and a year later he released his first full-length studio album on the Koch label. In June 2013, Davis released another album called „I Will Be Me“ and a year later performed at his first UK concert for 13 years.

When it comes to his private life, Davies had an intense relationship as a teenager with his girlfriend Sue Sheehan. The two were forced to separate by their families after Sue found out she was pregnant, and Dave didn’t meet their daughter until 1993. Davies married Lisbet Davies in 1967 with whom he has four sons. His later relationship with Nancy Evans resulted in another three children.

1I suppose it's an inborn thing that I don't like to be made to do anything.
2I've always thought there was a conspiracy at work to prevent The Kinks being the top band in the world. Whenever we were doing well, something shit would happen and we'd fall flat on our asses. It's been like that throughout our career.
3"It wasn't called 'heavy metal' when I invented it." - when asked in the 80s if The Kinks were trying to play "heavy metal".

2Although a great majority of the better-known Kinks songs were Ray Davies compositions, Dave wrote and sang lead on several Kinks classics as well, including "Death of a Clown", "Susannah's Still Alive", and "Rats".
3A revolving door of bassists and, eventually, keyboard-players and drummers went through The Kinks as the two Davies brothers gained infamy among musicians for Dave's allegedly abusive, irresponsible behavior and Ray's controlling, superior attitude.
4In their original stage, The Kinks (or as they were then known, The Ravens) were originally gathered and led by a 15-year-old Dave, who also wrote the few original songs that they performed at the time. His older brother Ray Davies joined the group merely as a rhythm guitarist and backing singer. It was only when they changed to The Kinks that Ray took over as front-man and the main songwriter.
5In 2004, the same year his estranged brother Ray Davies was shot in the leg by a thief, he suffered a stroke while in an elevator. His recovery has gone well, but has not yet returned to the stage as of winter 2008.
6He has three children, Daniel Davies, Lana Davies and Eddie, from his relationship with Nancy. Both Daniel and Lana are musicians. Lana has released her music through the Internet. Daniel is lead guitarist in "Year Long Disaster". The band's name stems from the events of 2004 affecting Ray and Dave Davies.
7He had a daughter, Tracy, at the age of 15. He married Lisbet in 1967 and they had 4 sons; Martin, Simon, Christian and Russell.
8Elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of The Kinks) in 1990.
9Younger brother of Ray Davies.
10Rock musician (The Kinks).
