He later attended Dartmouth College graduating with a BA in English literature, while at the UCLA Birney received an MA in Theatre Arts, and then decided to pursue an acting career.

Following his notable roles in the theater in such adaptations as Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Richard II and Richard III among others, David finally got his first on-screen part in 1967. He appeared in an episode of the Primetime Emmy Award-nominated series “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing”, and then starred in a Primetime Emmy Award-nominated TV movie called “Saint Joan” (1967). From 1972 to 1973, he portrayed Bernie Steinberg in 24 episodes of the Golden Globe Award-nominated show “Bridget Loves Bernie”, which is one of his best parts to date. In 1976, Birney played John Quincy Adams in the Primetime Emmy Award-winning show “The Adams Chronicles”, and also had a role as Serpico in the series about the famous New York detective who hunted bad cops. He ended the ‘70s with a starring role in John Carpenter’s horror movie “Someone’s Watching Me!” (1978), and starred in the Primetime Emmy Award-winning television drama “High Midnight” (1979), all of which contributed steadily to his net worth.
