David is a York native, and went to Catholic St George’s Secondary Modern School in his hometown. , where he became a part of the choir and often appeared on stage in musical productions, as he had also joined the Rowntree Youth Theatre. Following his matriculation, he joined the optical instruments production firm Cooke, Troughton & Simms, spending five years as an apprentice, and then left for London to join the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts to study acting.

His debut role came in a minor role in 1971 in the TV series “Nearest and Dearest”, after which he was selected for the role of Colin Woodcock in the TV drama series “A Family at War” (1972). He then ventured into theater by joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, and subsequently featured in numerous successful productions, including “King Lear”, “The Caretaker”, and “No Man’s Land” among many others, which increased his wealth.

In his early career on screen, David had little success as he only featured in minor roles. This lasted until the mid- ‘90s, when he was selected for the role of Eddie Wells in the TV Mini-Series “Our Friends in the North”, and in 1997 he was Arnold Springer in the TV Mini-Series “Reckless”. Slowly his name started more popular in the acting world, and in 2000 he portrayed Henry in the drama film “The King Is Alive”, while in 2001 he was chosen for the role of Albert Filch in the first installment of the Harry Potter franchise “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”, and has appeared in six more films of the franchise, which increased his net worth to a large degree, thanks to the tremendous success of the films.

David continued successfully, as in 2002 he portrayed Nigel Bray in the romantic drama film “Nicholas Nickleby”, and also featured in the thriller “This Is Not a Love Song”. Furthermore, starting in 2002 David appeared in 12 episodes of the TV comedy series “Wild West” until 2004, and in 2006 he was Sweeney’s Father in David Moore’s crime horror “Sweeney Todd”. David continued with notable roles, such as the lead role of Cooper in the thriller “The Holding” (2011), and then as William Hartnell in the biopic about the original Doctor Who, entitled “An Adventure in Space and Time” (2013). The following year he was chosen for the role of Professor Abraham Setrakian, a Holocaust survivor who subsequently became a vampire hunter in the TV horror thriller series “The Strain” (2014-2017), created by Guillermo del Toro, with the help of Chuck Hogan.

Most recently, David has been working on the films “The Lodgers”, which is currently in post-production, and on the film “Await Further Instructions”, which is scheduled for release, late in 2017.

David is the President of Second Thoughts Drama Group, which performs in the area of Stratford-upon-Avon. He has received an Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Warwick and York St. John.
