David’s father is Jack Furnish, director at Bristol-Myers pharmaceutical company. David is the middle child between two siblings.

David attended Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate Institute, and matriculated in 1981. Afterwards, he attended the Richard Ivey School of Business, at the University of Western Ontario, graduating with a degree in Business Administration, and was then recruited by the advertising agency Oglivy & Mather. He worked there for many years which increased his net worth significantly. Eventually, he transferred to England and became part of the company’s board.

He’s since forayed into other endeavors, including filmmaking, creating Rocket Pictures alongside Elton John. One of his first films was the documentary “Tantrums and Tiaras” which was created in 1997 about Elton John, and included interviews as well as concert footage – a large part of the documentary featured a performance in Rio de Janeiro. The documentary won a Chris Award given by the Columbus Film and Video Festival, and was later re-released with extra material as a “Director’s Cut”. Other projects David has worked on include “Kofi Annan: Center of the Storm” which is about the Ghanaian diplomat and UN Secretary-General. He also worked as a producer of the 2011 film “Gnomeo & Juliet” which is an animated film based on the Shakespeare play, and was released through Disney and Touchstone Pictures – the two title characters are voiced by Emily Blunt and James McAvoy. Furnish has also worked on television and theatre projects, most notably being the executive producer of “Billy Elliot the Musical”. All of these projects have also helped in elevating his net worth.

Aside from his film work, David is a regular columnist for GQ and Interview magazine, and is also the contributing editor of Tatler magazine. In 2015, he was named as one of GQ’s 50 best dressed British men.

For his personal life, it is known that Furnish started a relationship with singer Sir Elton John in 1993, and proposed to him in 2005. They entered into civil partnership later in that year, and they had a surrogate son in 2010. In 2013, they had another son born through the same surrogate. The following year same-sex marriage became legal in England, and they married after nine years of civil partnership.

1I think it's so ironic that quite a lot of Queen's fans probably had no idea that Freddie Mercury was gay whatsoever, even though he embraced so many iconographic images and what gay men were supposed to look like, and the band was called Queen. The "I Want to Break Free" video took that and pushed it to another level. I think it was a very brave thing for them to do because it was acknowledging a side of the group that a lot of their fans probably hadn't considered at the time.
2[on Gnomeo & Juliet (2011)] When Elton (John) and I work on things, we want to invest out time, creativity and energy in things that hopefully bring the world closer together, not further apart. The movie's message essentially says it doesn't matter if you're a red or a blue. At the end of the day parents should love their children and want what's best for them. Elton and I try not be judgmental people. We are not advocates in the placard-carrying way. We just try to live our life by example.
1Although he is married to musician Elton John and his husband has a knighthood, he is not entitled to call himself Sir David Furnish in the way a woman would have been able to call herself Lady had she married John.
2Furnish and his husband, Elton John, welcomed their second son Elijah Joseph Daniel on Friday January 11, 2013.
3His son, Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, with husband Elton John, was born via surrogate on 25th December 2010.
4Was friends with Mike Myers in high school.
5Godfather of Brooklyn Beckham along with his husband Elton John.
6Was among the guests at Pamela Anderson's and Kid Rock's wedding
7Registered his civil partnership with long-term partner Elton John at Windsor Town Hall on December 21, 2005, the first day that civil unions between homosexuals were legal in England and Wales. The ceremony was performed by Registrar Clair Williams, who also presided over the union between Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles. In December 2014, they upgraded their relationship to a marriage following the legalization of homosexual marriage earlier in the year.
