Dawn Michelle Staley was born on the 4th May 1970, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA, and is a basketball coach and former professional basketball player who competed in the WNBA for Charlotte Sting and Houston Comets. Staley is a Hall of Famer, was selected to six WNBA All-Star games, and has three gold medals from Olympic Games. Her playing career encompassed 1996 to 2006, but her coaching career started in 2000.

After her graduation in 1992, Staley moved to Europe where she played basketball in France, Italy, and Spain, before coming back home to join the Richmond Rage in 1996.

In 1999, Staley was selected as the 9th overall pick by the Charlotte Sting where she played from 1999 to 2005 and led them to the WNBA Championship game in 2001. Staley was traded to the Houston Comets in 2005, and she retired after that season.

In 2008, Staley moved to South Carolina where she had even better results, reaching the NCAA Sweet Sixteen on three occasions (2011-12, 2013-14, and 2015-16), and the NCAA Final Four (2014-15).
