Richard Remick Smothers was born on 20 November 1939, in New York City, USA, and is a musician, actor, composer, and comedian, best known for being part of the musical comedy team the Smothers Brothers, alongside his older brother Tom. All of his efforts have helped put his net worth to where it is today.
How rich is Dick Smothers? As of early-2017, sources estimate a net worth that is at $1 million, mostly earned through success as one of the Smothers Brothers, during a career which began in the early ‘60s. They would appear on numerous televisions shows and he’s also appeared in several films. All of his achievements have ensured the position of his wealth.
Dick Smothers Net Worth $1 million
Dick’s father was an Army officer who passed away as a prisoner of war. The family later moved to Southern California, and Smothers would attend Verdugo Hills High School. Later, he moved to Redondo Union High School from where he matriculated, and then attended San Jose State University where he became part of the school’s track team. He was a distance runner and was coached by Lloyd “Bud” Winter.
In the 1960s, Dick and his brother Tom formed The Smothers Brothers and would start to gain popularity with their musical comedy shows. They began being featured on television, which would start to increase their net worth. Eventually, they were given their own sitcom entitled “The Smothers Brothers Show” which ran from 1965 to 1966, the last CBS sitcom to be filmed in black-and-white, consisting of a total of 32 episodes. The show was sponsored by V05 hairdressing products as well as American Tobacco. After the show, the brothers then established “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” in 1967. It was a variety show that aired for two years and would become a major success. It competed with NBC’s “Bonanza” for audience records, however, disputes between executives would lead to the show being abruptly cancelled in 1969.
Dick was then little heard of until in 1993, Dick became part of the cartoon movie “Precious Moments: Timmy’s Special Delivery” in which he voiced one of the characters. Two years later, he was cast in an unusually serious role in the film “Casino”, which was directed by Martin Scorsese, playing a dishonest Nevada State Senator, partly based on former US Senator Harry Reid. The film also starred Sharon Stone and Robert De Niro, and was based on the book “Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas” by Nicholas Pileggi who would co-write the screenplay as well. The brothers continued to perform together until 2010, when they announced their retirement.
Dick’s financial situation wasn’t that great, and he filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2011.
For his personal life, it is known that Smothers was married to Linda Miller from 1959 to 1969, then to Lorraine Martin in 1986. In 1997, he married Denby Franklin and it lasted until 2006; he has six children. Smothers has been very active in racing, involving amateur automobile racing, drag racing, and road racing.
