Didier Drogba Net Worth $90 Million
Didier Drogba started his football career in France, to where his parents had migrated, at the age of 15, joining various local clubs, and making his way into the semi-professional Levallois football club. After graduating from high school and applying for university, Drogba joined another football club called Le Mans. Drogba’s beginnings, however, looked fairly grim as he suffered many injuries and was unable to play for the most part. Drogba made his return to La Mans in 1999 and tried to set himself up as a professional football player. In 2001, Didier Drogba was transferred from La Mans to another club called Guingamp, and even though Drogba did a lot better this time, the staff was unconvinced of his skills. Things changed a lot in the next season when Drogba became one of the most important players with seventeen goals scored in a total of thirty four appearances.
Drogba’s impressive plays attracted the attention of one of the leading French clubs Marseille, to which he was soon transferred for a fee of more than $5 million. With Marseille, Drogba won his first Player of the Year award, so he was soon purchased by the English football club Chelsea. Drogba’s contract with Chelsea amounted to an impressive $36 million. Needless to say, Drogba’s net worth at the time was at its peak. During his lengthy career with Chelsea, Drogba won the Premier League Golden Boot award, League Cup as well as FA Cup finals, and became one of the highest goal scorers of all time.
In 2012, Chelsea announced that Didier Drogba would leave the team, while Drogba himself released a note saying that he would be joining Shanghai Shenhua football club, where his salary would amount to an impressive $200,000 per week. Even though the contract was supposed to last for two years, in 2013 Drogba signed a year and a half contract with Galatasaray, but then in 2014 he couldn’t resist returning to Chelsea, to play under top manager Jose Mourinho. He has now decided to retire, at the end of the 2014-15 season, having made more than 350 appearances for the club, winning four Premier League titles with them, four FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions League Cup in 2011-12, being named Man of the Match. In particular, Didier has scored over 50 goals in European competitions.
Drogba has never forgotten his country, though, and since debuting in 2002, has made 104 appearances and scored 65 goals, the all-time top scorer. He has been named African Footballer of the Year twice, and gained many other individual awards.
In his personal life, Didier Drogba is a busy man. In 2011 he married Diakité Lalla, a Malian lady, and they have three children. Further, Didier Drogba does not shy away from charitable work. He has consistently made donations into the Didier Drogba Foundation, as well as other charities and was even named a Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations Development Programme. Considered to be one of the 100 most influential people by the “Time” magazine, Didier Drogba has been actively partaking in various events to bring peace to Ivory Coast, even managing to move an international game to an opposition city. Hopefully, his efforts on all fronts will bring just rewards.
