Don attended high school in Shenandoah, Iowa and started his career along with the Everly Family, and the brothers performed as “Little Donnie and Baby Boy Phil” on KMA and KFNF in the mid-1940s. The family then moved to Tennessee where Don attended West High School, and after the brothers matriculated, they focused on a music career.

Don and Phil got the attentions of country star and manager Chet Atkins and they started recording for Columbia Records, but they weren’t successful, and they dropped out from that label. They later signed with Acuff-Rose as songwriters and would then be introduced to Cadence Records. They made their first recording entitled “Bye Bye Love” which was rejected by other acts, but which would prove highly successful and reached second spot on the pop charts behind Elvis Presley, becoming their first million-seller. They continued to release hits which became successful in both the US and the UK, and toured with Buddy Holly in 1957-58.

After working three years on Cadence, the brothers then signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1960, spending the next decade there, and releasing “Cathy’s Clown” which would become their biggest selling single at eight million copies. Other successful singles included “Walk Right Back”, “Crying in the Rain”, and “When Will I Be Loved”. The brothers then decided to start their own record label after a falling out with Acuff-Rose songwriters, and created Calliope Records. They didn’t stop working as a duo, but in the next few years, they sold fewer records and their net worth’s increase started to slow down. Even though their popularity in the US waned in the 1960s, they were still very popular in Australia, the UK, and Canada. They returned to country rock in 1968’s “Roots” which received a lot of praise. Don also tried to release a solo album in 1970, but was unsuccessful.

From 1973 to 1983, Don went on to find some success in the country charts. He recorded “Everytime You Leave” alongside Emmylou Harris. He then reunited with his brother in 1983 and made their last charting single three years later entitled “Born Yesterday”. The brothers continued to collaborate with other big names such as Andrew Lloyd Webber and Simon & Garfunkel. In 2014, Phil passed away due to lung disease and the family had been known to have weak lungs according to an interview with Don. One of Don’s latest endeavors is endorsing Hillary Clinton for the 2016 presidential election.

For his personal life, it is known that Don was married to Mary Sue Ingraham (1957-61) with whom he had one child, and actress Venetia Stevenson (1962-70) – they have three children. He is now married to Adela Garza. Don had a serious amphetamine addiction in the 1960s and had to undergo treatment to get over it. His brother died in 2014 from lung desease.
