Elias Koteas was born to Greek Canadian parents; his father was a mechanic for Canadian National Railway, while his mother designed and made hats, so Koteas is fluent in Greek and French. He attended a college in Montreal, but left in order to pursue acting. He enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, from which he graduated in 1983. Then, he continued his education at the Actors Studio in New York City, where his mentors were Ellen Burstyn and Peter Masterson.
