To begin with, Emily is the daughter of Barbara Trask and Paul Erwin. She grew up in Addison, Texas, a suburb of Dalla, with two older sisters. Emily began playing the violin at the age of seven, and studied banjo at the age of 10. Later, she learned all the string instruments that she could get hold of, and finally accordion. From 1984 to 1989, she played with her sister Martie, a classmate and Sharon Gilchrist, in the Bluegrass Express, a teenage Bluegrass group founded by these four.

In 1989, after appearing with the aforementioned group at Bluegrass festivals and making street music, she founded the alternative country band Dixie Chicks with her sister Martie, the guitarist Robin Lynn Macy and the bassist Laura Lynch; their mix of bluegrass and mainstream country music appealed to a broad spectrum of country fans. Later, the group moved towards rock and pop music, but even so, The Dixie Chicks have so far sold more than 31 million albums in the US, making them the most successful female band in the country. It should be noted that The Dixie Chicks reached success in the country with albums like “Wide Open Spaces” (1998) which has been certified 12 times platinum in the US alone. Additionally, the album topped the Billboard Country and Canadian Country music charts. Other albums that earned multi-platinum certificates worldwide are “Fly” (1999), “Home” (2002) and “Taking the Long Way” (2006), all these studio albums topping the Billboard Country chart, as well as appearing in the top 10 positions of music charts in European countries and Canada. Concerning the singles, “Landslide” (2002) and “Not Ready to Make Nice” (2006) received respectively gold and platinum certificates. They have been nominated for thirteen Grammy Awards, five of them won in 2007 including the Grammy for the Best Album of the Year for “Taking The Long Way”. To conclude, all the above mentioned recordings have added significant sums to the total size of Emily Robison’s net worth, as well as benefiting other members of the band.

Finally, in the personal life of Robison, Emily married the country singer Charlie Robison in the middle of 1999 – before this marriage she wrote the very romantic hit “Cowboy Take Me Away” for him. They have three children, but in 2008, the two divorced.
