Erika attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Eden Hall, and after matriculating, she then became a part of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and one of the youngest individuals ever accepted there. She graduated in 1966, and would then be a part of various theatre productions in several locations, including Houston, Chicago and Milwaukee. She then made one of her first television appearances in the adaptation of the novel “Full Circle”, playing the role of Jean Roberts.

In 1971, Slezak decided to audition for the role of nurse Mary Kennecott in “All My Children” – she didn’t land the role, but was offered another part as Victoria Lord Riley in “One Life to Live”, and would become a part of the show for the next 42 years. Her net worth increased significantly thanks to the role, and she would win a total of six Daytime Emmy Awards. She also holds the record for Emmys by a female performer, and in the important category “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series”, in 1984, 1986, 1992, 1995, 1996, and 2005, plus being nominated a further four times. The achievement places her second to Anthony Geary for most Emmy wins playing one character, and she also won a Soap Opera Digest Award. Slezak was instrumental in many changes for “One Life to Live”, including the removal of head writer Dena Higley, after she released a statement that Dena was writing stories that no one was interested in; this then led to Ron Carlivati becoming the co-head writer of the series before Dena left. In 2011, it was announced that “One Life to Live” would air its final episode in 2012. Later, the show was licensed by Prospect Park and was moved to an online format, with many cast members including Slezak joining the online move. After some delays, the online version started in 2013 and ran for a few months, released on Hulu and iTunes.

For her personal life, it is known that Erika married Brian Davies in 1978 and they have two children. Her daughter played a teenage Victoria in a flashback scene of “One Life to Live”.
