Little is known about Ernie’s early life and growing up. Nevertheless, after high school matriculation, Ernie enrolled at Northeastern University, from which he eventually graduated, following which Ernie found his first job at the radio station 98.5/WROR in Boston, reading news. Then in 1976 he was hired as an anchor at WPRI-TV in Providence, Rhode Island. Just two years, later, Ernie got the job at WABC-TV in New York, as anchor of the 11:00 pm Eyewitness News broadcast – he was teamed with Rose Ann Scamadella for the show until 1983, and then moved to 5:00 pm with Kaity Tong as his co-anchor, after he replaced Stomr Field. Then in 1989 he left the station and joined WCBS to anchor 5:00 pm, 6:00pm and 11:00 pm news, replacing several newscasters.
