Ernie attended the University of Georgia, and during his time there, took a job as the news director for the radio station WAGQ-FM which he held the job for a year, and would then graduate with a degree in journalism as summa cum laude. In 1979, he started broadcasting at WMAZ-TV, becoming a news anchor for two years. He then moved to South Carolina to work as a reporter for WSPA-TV, but in 1982 he moved back to Georgia and took a job at Atlanta’s WSB-TV as a news reporter, also becoming the station’s weekend reporter and sports anchor. In 1989 he joined Turner Sports, and subsequently covered Atlanta Braves baseball games in 1993 to 1996 as part of SportSouth (FSN South).
