Born in Brooklyn, New York City, Owens is the son of Major Owens, a former US Congressman, and Ether Werfel Owens. He attended Arcata High School where he discovered his love for acting, and later on graduated from Yale University.

Owens’ career started in the ‘80s and he immediately hit it off when he became part of “The Cosby Show”. He joined the hit sitcom in its last five seasons, playing the role of Elvin Tibideaux.
