To begin with, the boy was raised in Santurce, and at aged 12, he organized a group of amateurs taking their first steps in the genre of tropical music. Two years later he received the first opportunity to record professionally from teacher Mario Ortiz. In 1980, Rosa participated in the recording “Tribute to Eddie Palmieri” with the Puerto Rico All Star.
At the age of 24, he made his debut as a soloist and conductor with the support of Combo Records. In 1990, he made his theatrical debut in the play “La Pareja Dispareja” next to Rafo Muñiz and Luis Vigoreaux, and in addition he made his debut at the Centro de Bellas Artes in a concert with the Nicaraguan Luis Enrique. The release of his album “Expression” in 1999 reinforced the presence of Gilberto in the international music market, and Gilberto Santa Rosa won the Puerto Rican Salsa Singer of the Year Award and the People’s Choice Award.
The year 2002 marked the return of the singer with a new record production entitled “Viceversa”. The first single to promote was the ballad “For More than Intent”, composed by the Colombian Kike Santander. In 2003, Gilberto organised the concert Viva Rodríguez in tribute to the Tito Rodríguez. While his performances gained praise from the press and the public, the release of the compact “Solo boleros” kept it in force. At the beginning of 2004, the singer offered an unforgettable recital in the Center of Fine Arts of San Juan – under the title Time to Love, Santa Rosa delighted his audience with the repertoire of his most recent recording “Boleros Only”. The success of this concert led him to open new functions to satisfy the demand of the public. Then, the following albums “A Christmas With Gilberto” (2008) and “Irrepetible” (2010) topped the Billboard Tropical Albums chart. Recently, Rosa’s album “I Need a Bolero” (2014) has been released.
